ABC News (formerly ABC News 24; also known as ABC News channel) is a 24-hour Australian news channel started and owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The channel replaced the old ABC HD channel that broadcasted high definition ABC TV at the same time and began airing under the name ABC News 24 on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at 19:30 (AEST).
Most of the channel's content is produced at ABN station in Ultimo, Sydney, where they can watch the channel being presented from an atrium overlooking the news presentation studio. ABC's breakfast television program, News Breakfast, Afternoon Briefing and evening program The World is produced at ABV Southbank, Melbourne (weekdays).
ABC announced it plans to open a 24-hour news channel in January 2010. ABC News 24's logo was revealed by Freeview in its new promotion on Tuesday, June 22nd. The channel's official promotional video was broadcast on 24 digital channels on July 6-8.
In the weeks before the official announcement, there was speculation about the channel's release date. The Daily Telegraph claimed that the channel will be delayed due to technical problems at ABC's new playout facility MediaHub in southwestern Sydney in early July, while other organizations reported that the channel will open in mid-July.
ABC announced on 13 July 2010 that the first live broadcast of the channel will take place on 22 July.
