CGTN (China Global Television Network), formerly known as CCTV-9 and CCTV News, is an international English news channel based in Beijing, owned by the state-owned broadcaster China Central Television.
Part of the China Global Television Network group is owned and operated by China Central Television (CCTV), a state-owned media organization in China, under the control of the Promotion Department of the Chinese Communist Party.
The service targets the overseas market and was launched on September 25, 2000. Coverage includes news broadcasts, in-depth reports and comment programs, and feature presentations. Free satellite signals are received in more than 100 countries. He was cited as the spokesperson for the Chinese government, which was part of the propaganda machine.
CGTN is registered as a foreign agent in the USA. In February 2020, the United States Department of State designated CGTN and other Chinese state-owned media outlets as "foreign missions".
CCTV began evaluating international news programs in English on January 1, 1979, at the beginning of China's "Reform and opening" era. English newsletters began on CCTV-2 in 1986 and were available to overseas audiences when they switched to CCTV-4 in February 1991. CCTV-9 began broadcasting across China on September 25, 2000 and became the country's first British television channel.
On January 1, 2003, CCTV-9 entered the United States cable market as part of an agreement allowing AOL, Time Warner, and News Corporation to access cable systems in Guangdong. In its early years, CCTV-9 broadcast newsletters and cultural interest shows in English for most of each day, and reposted mostly at night in China. One of his biggest projects involved the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Until April 2010, CCTV-9 is a mixed general interest channel that includes news, itineraries and language training. However, on the 26th of that month, CCTV-9 was restarted as a 24-hour English-language news service and renamed "CCTV News".
