Kana TV (Amharic: ቃና ቲቪ) is an Ethiopian satellite television station owned by Canal +. It was founded by three Ethiopian entrepreneurs together with the Moby Media Group and officially launched on April 4, 2016.
Kana TV produces voice over translations by dubbing foreign content in Amharic. The station specializes in series dramas, especially Turkish television dramas, which are gaining an above-average market share overall and are becoming the most popular television station in Ethiopia.
Kana TV broadcast across the Nilesat area and recently began broadcasting on Ethiosat. The channel works exclusively in the Amharic language, with part of the content being produced locally and the other half being synchronized. The source of its popularity is the multitude of dubbed foreign television dramas that it broadcasts.
The best-known include Turkish dramas such as Kuzey Güney (Kuzi Guni) O Hayat Benim (Yetkema Hiwot) Kara Para Aşk (Tikur Fikir) and Zalim Istanbul (Shimya). his studios to make room for locally produced content.
Since the television market in Ethiopia was still relatively young at the time of its introduction, Kana TV had to commission its own studies on television audiences in the country.
These studies showed that the majority of viewers were watching foreign language content, with channels like MBC 1 and Al Jazeera among the most popular in Ethiopia waiting to be satisfied.
In March 2017, after launching its channel, Kana TV published the first independently conducted comprehensive TV market study. According to this study, Kana TV had gained a market share of 34% and 8 of the 10 top-rated prime-time shows were on Kana TV (as of March 2017).
