YTN is the world's first 24-hour Korean news channel to broadcast throughout South Korea. It was founded on September 14, 1993 and began broadcasting on March 1, 1995.
YTN originally stood for Yonhap Television News, because the channel was a subsidiary of the Yonhap news agency until its separation from the agency in 1998. The channel's previous slogans are "Yesterday, Tomorrow and Now" and "Your True Network", both being acronyms for the name of the channel after separation. The channel's three current slogans are "Always First", "Exclusive Tomorrow" and "Yes! Top News!" It also has the slogan: "Whenever and wherever there is news, we are there".
YTN programming consists of a mix of live newsletters, live broadcasts of major breaking news, commentary programs and overnight reruns.
YTN increased its news offering in 2017, with three new weekday shows: Midnight News (midnight - 1 a.m.), Morning News (6 a.m. - 8 a.m.) and News Talk (11 a.m. - 11:40 a.m.).
For most of the day, continuous news coverage is presented from one of YTN's two studios. From 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. (weekdays) and from 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. (weekends), commentary programs are broadcast. Most of these programs are presented by commentators discussing the general problems facing Korea and the world. In the evening, with updates, YTN also presents the main news of the day and awaits the headlines of tomorrow.
