American Idol Season 9: Road to Hollywood Auditions

REMINDER: NO SPOILERS IN COMMENTS! Thank you 🙂

Tonight’s episode felt unusually packed, as if the producers had squeezed an entire week’s worth of auditions into a single hour. For weeks the audition episodes have had a scattered, almost random feel—understandable given that the Hollywood Rounds, which usually air months later, happened concurrently with the first week of auditions this season. That scheduling left little room for the usual pacing and storytelling that helps audition episodes build momentum.

Still, the “best of the rest” episode delivered a solid hour of television. Several contestants stood out and are worth watching as the competition moves into Hollywood:

Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox only appeared briefly in a montage, but both offered memorable moments: Lee with a soulful rasp and Crystal with a powerful bluesy belt. Their short clips teased real potential.

Lacey Brown returned after previous auditions and impressed with a distinctive tone and lovely phrasing. Her rendition of “Over the Rainbow” reminded viewers why she had been noticed before.

Didi Benami stood out with a big voice, an intriguing tone, and excellent phrasing. Her emotional audition, given in memory of a friend, prompted a visible reaction from the judges and suggested she could be a serious contender.

Aaron Kelly may not have been the most technically impressive performer of the night, but his gentle demeanor and sweet, country-tinged delivery could attract a strong fanbase, especially among younger viewers.

After nine seasons, audition fatigue is understandable, and some of this year’s rounds felt flatter than usual. Nevertheless, closing the audition phase and moving into the Hollywood Rounds should help the show focus on the contestants who will matter. The producers appear to be emphasizing female performers this year, though it’s still early to say how the season will unfold. The Hollywood days should give a clearer picture.

Recap of notable auditions from the episode:

Jessica Furney – 20, Warneke, KS – “Footprints in the Sand”
Jessica returned after a previous audition with a Janis Joplin song. She’s refreshed her look and chose a contemporary inspirational song, which made her performance sound a bit generic despite a solid vocal. All four judges advanced her to Hollywood.

Amanda Shectman – 19, Roslyn, NY – “Good Morning Heartache”
Amanda brought theatrical flair and several impressions to her audition. Her performance leaned toward Broadway-style expression rather than natural singing, and the judges called out her over-the-top manner. Still, they saw potential and sent her through.

Lee Dewyze – 23, Mount Prospect, IL – “Ain’t No Sunshine”
Crystal Bowersox – 23, Elliston, OH – “Piece of My Heart”
Both appeared in a quick montage. Lee’s soulful rasp and Crystal’s blues-inflected power hinted at artists with strong personalities and musical identities.

A montage followed featuring return hopefuls, including some contestants the judges barely remembered.

Lacey Brown – 23, Amarillo, TX – “Over the Rainbow”
Lacey, a top-50 returnee from last season, showed the same unique tone and elegant phrasing that made her memorable before. Her audition confirmed why she deserved a second shot.

Stephanie Fisher – “Fever”
Stephanie has auditioned many times. Despite a backstory about being inspired by a judge, her vocal performance was weak and she left before the judges could formally reject her.

Rachel Hubbard, Thaddeus Johnson, and Genesis Moore – Three talented 16-year-olds delivered solid performances, though one contestant leaned toward a shouty style. Each advanced to Hollywood.

Adrian Chandtchi – 17, Apopka, FL – “Can’t Help Falling in Love”
Adrian, who introduced himself with colorful self-descriptions, had a small, uncertain voice that drew teasing from the judges rather than praise.

Michael Lynche – 26, Astoria, NY – “Unchained Melody”
Michael offered a smooth, sentimental rendition and charmed the judges with a warm presence. He received unanimous approval.

Didi Benami – 22, Hollywood, CA – “Hey Jude”
Auditioning in memory of a lost friend, Didi delivered an emotional, well-phrased performance that moved the judges. She earned a strong yes from most of the panel.

Aaron Kelly – 16, Sonestown, PA – “The Climb”
Aaron shared a difficult personal backstory about being raised by relatives after his parents struggled. He performed the inspirational song with a countrified touch and a modest, likeable delivery that won the judges over.

Kimberly Bishop – 20, Altamonte Springs, FL – “I Kissed a Girl”
Kimberly emulated the original artist’s style but struggled with pitch and control. The judges passed on her.

Shaddaii Harris – 22, Arlington, TX – “Fallin’”
Shaddaii arrived with heartfelt parental support and high expectations, but her audition revealed she was unable to carry a tune. The judges gently but firmly rejected her.

Hope Johnson – 19, Arlington, TX – “I Hope You Dance”
Hope shared a humble background and sang with clear, authentic country tone. The judges liked her sincerity and advanced her to Hollywood.

More than 100,000 people auditioned this season, with only 181 advancing to Hollywood. Next week the Hollywood Round begins, featuring a new judge at the table. The competition now shifts from first impressions to performances that will reveal which contestants can grow under pressure.
