Morgan Wallen scores a major commercial breakthrough as his sophomore release, Dangerous: The Double Album, debuts at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts dated Jan. 23. At the same time, the lead single “Wasted on You” launches at the top of the Hot Country Songs chart, marking an unprecedented chart debut for the record and single.
Released Jan. 8 via Big Loud/Republic, the 30-track double album opened with 265,000 equivalent album units in the tracking week ending Jan. 14, according to MRC Data. That total combines traditional sales, streaming activity and track-equivalent album units, and it represents one of the strongest first-week performances for a country artist in recent years.
This achievement gives Wallen his first career No. 1 on the Billboard 200. His previous studio album, If I Know Me, had debuted in May 2018 and later climbed to No. 13 in August 2020; it also reached No. 1 on Top Country Albums last August after a slow-building chart run. On the current chart, If I Know Me sits at No. 5, earning roughly 17,000 units this week, a modest increase over the prior week.
Wallen expressed his gratitude and amazement at the response. “This is absolutely insane,” he told Billboard. “Thank you to the fans for making this one of the best weeks of my life. When we decided to go for it with a double album, I knew we were taking a risk, but I believed in the music and hoped it would be something y’all loved. This goes way beyond any of my expectations.” He added thanks to family, friends and his team for their support in bringing the project to fruition.
More Morgan Wallen Milestones
- The album set a new streaming benchmark for country music, registering the largest streaming week ever for a country album and more than doubling the previous high for the genre.
- With 265,000 overall units, Dangerous posted the biggest week for a country album since Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty debuted with 266,000 in September 2018.
- This marks the largest opening week for a solo male country artist since Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights in 2015.
- The release made history by becoming the first to debut simultaneously at No. 1 on Top Country Albums and on the Hot Country Songs chart, which is compiled from airplay, streaming and sales data.
- Wallen is now the only artist with multiple Hot Country Songs debuts at No. 1 in the chart’s history, having previously opened at the summit with “7 Summers” in August 2020.
- “Wasted on You” is Wallen’s third career No. 1 on Hot Country Songs. He first reached the top with “Whiskey Glasses,” which led the chart for two weeks beginning in May 2019.
- The new single began with 17.9 million U.S. streams and 10,000 downloads sold in its first tracking week, topping both Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales charts.
- Wallen dominated the Hot Country Songs top 10 in a single week, placing six tracks from Dangerous inside the region. Alongside “Wasted on You,” the album’s entries included “More Than My Hometown” at No. 3, “7 Summers” at No. 4, “Somebody’s Problem” at No. 6, “Sand in My Boots” at No. 8 and “Warning” at No. 10.
- Overall, 27 of the album’s 30 tracks charted on the 50-position Hot Country Songs list in the same week, setting a new single-week record for the chart and eclipsing the previous high.
The scale of this debut reflects a broader shift in how country music is consumed. Streaming now plays a central role in first-week tallies, and double albums or larger track counts can amplify total streaming numbers. Wallen’s strategy of releasing a 30-song set clearly translated into streaming strength, while the singles’ performance on digital platforms and country radio contributed to the multi-chart success.
Critically and commercially, the rollout for Dangerous: The Double Album underscores Wallen’s growing prominence in country music. The combination of a bold, extensive tracklist and strong fan engagement produced one of the most impactful country releases in recent memory, both in streaming metrics and traditional chart performance. For Wallen, the new No. 1s validate the risk of a double album and mark a defining moment in his career.
