American Idol returns with a clear, familiar structure and a few new twists. This season will produce a Top 10 composed of five men and five women; additional finalists will be chosen by the judges as wildcards, though the press release does not specify how many wildcards will be added.
The overall format resembles past seasons: an audition stage, the Hollywood round, semifinals and finals. Notable differences include a shorter semifinal phase with only one results show, and a Hollywood detour to Las Vegas for a special performance. The addition of a wildcard round gives the judges and producers greater influence over the final lineup.

The judging panel for Season Ten features Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, bringing a mix of industry experience, pop sensibility and rock perspective. Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, will serve as the in-house mentor. Ryan Seacrest returns as host. The two-night premiere will showcase initial auditions from New York/New Jersey and New Orleans.
Following the two-night premiere, audition episodes will continue for three weeks on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning at 8:00 PM ET/PT. Contestants who advance from preliminary auditions will travel to Hollywood for the next round. Those who progress through Hollywood will then perform on the Cirque du Soleil LOVE stage in Las Vegas, where they will tackle Beatles songs as part of the show’s special segment.
After the Las Vegas performances, the judges will announce an expanded pool of semifinalists — 20 contestants in total, split evenly with 10 men and 10 women. Over two semifinal performance nights, viewers will vote and the five men and five women who receive the most votes will secure the first spots in the season’s finalists. The judges will then select the remaining finalists via a Wild Card round during the first results episode, completing the roster of contestants who will move forward into the live finals.
