The Voice season 23 premiered this week, and now that the first performances have aired, it’s time for viewers to weigh in and vote in our season-opening polls. If you missed any of the action, a full recap of premiere night is available on the site.

The Voice will stop airing Tuesday episodes after April 4

A quick scheduling update: NBC announced late in February that the game show The Wall will replace The Voice on Tuesdays beginning April 11. That means this season of The Voice is unusually compact—only 18 episodes in total. The condensed schedule changes how the live rounds will play out. For example, the first week of live shows on May 15 does not include a Tuesday results episode, which suggests the show will use real-time voting—similar to the instant vote format—to determine who moves into the finals. No dramatic backstories

One notable difference this season is the relative lack of highly dramatic personal narratives. While other singing competitions often highlight contestants’ traumatic pasts or life-or-death stories to foster an emotional connection, many contestants on The Voice focused on family and their journey back to music. Even heavier subjects that appeared—such as a contestant referencing a family history tied to segregation, or past tragedy—were presented in measured, often more optimistic tones. That restrained approach gives the show a different emotional cadence this season: viewers get to focus on the performances rather than prolonged, tearful backstories.

The new coaches are off to a good start

The coaching panel, refreshed with new additions, is bringing fresh energy. Niall Horan stands out for his quick wit and stage presence; his charm adds humor to the blind auditions. Chance the Rapper brings a more relaxed vibe, but he’s likely to shine once he begins working closely with his team. The dynamic between new coaches and the veterans—Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton—has already become a storyline. Contestants seem eager to join established coaches while also responding well to the newcomers.

Kelly Clarkson had a memorable coach-contestant reunion this week when Jej Vinson performed and ultimately joined her team after she turned for him. That moment was a highlight for viewers who enjoy seeing past contestants reconnect with mentors. Meanwhile, Blake Shelton continues to dominate airtime in what many are viewing as his farewell season. He remains candid and occasionally surprised by music outside his usual wheelhouse—he admitted he hadn’t heard Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” before, a moment that drew attention from longtime fans.

Performance-wise, the premiere produced several standout acts. Among the week’s strongest singers were NOVOIS, Kala Banham, Tasha Jessen, Carlos Rising, and Sheer Element. Night two, in particular, featured more memorable vocal moments, and the coaches were visibly engaged in deliberations about who to turn for and who to recruit.

The season’s tighter format and shifting schedule will likely make each live show and elimination more consequential. With fewer episodes, viewers should expect less filler and a faster path to the finals, which increases the importance of every vote and performance.
