American Idol Showstoppers: Kaeyra ditches the piano ballads for a raucous rock tune

American Idol is set to present its Showstopper round in two parts beginning Sunday, April 9, with the semi-finalists to be revealed by the end of Monday’s episode on April 10. The round will determine which contestants move forward toward the live competition at the Disney Aulani resort in Hawaii, and viewers should expect surprises as performers try to showcase new facets of their artistry to impress the judges and the live audience.

One of the night’s most talked-about moments comes from contestant Kaeyra, who has built early acclaim on slow, piano-driven covers that highlight her vocal control and emotional delivery. Up until now, Kaeyra has largely relied on stripped-down arrangements that let her voice take center stage. The Showstopper round, however, pushed her to try something different — a bolder, more aggressive approach intended to reveal a sturdier stage presence and a new musical identity.

Kaeyra shakes things up!

Rather than repeating the familiar piano ballads, Kaeyra surprised the room by picking up an electric instrument and launching into a raw, high-energy rendition of Bishop Briggs’ “River.” She later explained, “I really wanted to show my fierce side. I brought out my bass, I wanted to show the judges that I play more instruments.” The choice signaled a deliberate attempt to broaden how the judges and the audience perceive her, swapping intimacy for intensity and vulnerability for fierceness.

The performance visibly moved the judges. From the balcony the panel rose to their feet: Lionel Richie reacted with a stunned “wow,” while Luke Bryan admitted, “I got chills!” Their immediate, physical responses underscored that Kaeyra’s risk paid off on an emotional level. During the judges’ feedback session, Lionel raised a candid concern rooted in her résumé of singing in restaurants and lounges. He warned that background or low-key settings can make a performer forgettable: “I kept thinking, what you don’t want is for someone to be eating and not paying attention,” he said. He urged Kaeyra to craft an “instant identity” on stage — something that wakes up the room and demands attention.

That exchange highlighted a central tension for many Idol contestants: the need to balance technical vocal skill with a commanding, memorable presence. For Kaeyra, the shift from soft ballads to a raucous rock-leaning set was designed to answer that very critique, proving she can do more than deliver pretty covers — she can create moments that linger.

The semifinalists will be revealed

A total of 55 singers advanced out of the Hollywood solo and duet rounds to reach the Showstopper stage. In this phase, contestants perform with a full live band in front of a studio audience and the three judges — Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. After each onstage appearance, the judges convene to deliver face-to-face verdicts in a separate segment that reveals whether a contestant advances or is sent home.

This two-night Showstopper event is designed to test versatility under pressure: can performers adapt their style, own a live band setting, and present a distinct artistic identity that translates to television and a broader audience? For viewers and the contestants alike, the stakes are high. Fans will learn who makes the cut as semi-finalists by the end of the Monday episode, and those advancing will continue toward the next stages of the competition, where stagecraft and personality often matter as much as vocal talent.

Will Lionel’s cautionary words become a prelude to a dramatic elimination, or will Kaeyra’s bold pivot secure her a spot among the semi-finalists? Tune in to Showstoppers Part 1 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT to see how the judges respond and which singers move forward in the competition.
