Chris Daughtry DECLINED Joe Perry’s offer to front Aerosmith in Steven Tyler’s place
In 2011, a very public rift between Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and his bandmates briefly left the legendary rock group without their lead singer. At the same time, Steven Tyler’s decision to join the judging panel on American Idol created a high-profile distraction from the band’s usual activities. During that uncertain period, Aerosmith reached out to an unexpected option: American Idol season 5 alum Chris Daughtry.
According to Chris Daughtry’s account in a recent interview on The Dave Rickards Podcast, the call came directly from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. The invitation surprised Daughtry, who initially assumed the call might be a prank. Joe Perry reportedly phoned with a straightforward proposal: would Chris consider stepping in to sing with Aerosmith on the road and perform some of his own material alongside the band’s classics?
Chris says the offer left him stunned. He described being momentarily speechless and admitted he felt unqualified to replace Steven Tyler. Daughtry emphasized his deep respect for Tyler, calling his vocal style unique and irreplaceable. He also noted the awkwardness of joining a living legend’s band while Tyler was still around, saying the idea felt like it risked upsetting someone he admired.
“I was speechless”
“I was, like, ‘Uh … ,’” Daughtry recalled. “I was speechless. First of all, I don’t consider myself any caliber of singer that Steven Tyler is as far as I would not be able to tackle those songs the way Steven Tyler tackles them. He is irreplaceable in my mind. Furthermore, Steven Tyler’s alive! This whole fear of pissing off one of my heroes was just looming, and I was, like, ‘There’s no way I can do this, Joe.’”
While the prospect of singing with Aerosmith was “a terrifying concept” the instant it was proposed, Daughtry says he still treasures the encounter. He describes the episode as a memorable story he’ll hold “near and dear” for the rest of his life—a surprising and flattering moment of recognition from rock royalty, even though he ultimately declined.

After turning down Joe Perry’s invitation, Chris Daughtry stayed focused on his own career. He has continued writing, recording, and touring with his band Daughtry, pursuing their own musical path rather than stepping into another band’s legacy. Meanwhile, Steven Tyler did spend time as an American Idol judge and, over time, reconciled with his Aerosmith bandmates. The group eventually resumed touring, and they are set to launch their Peace Out farewell tour with the Black Crowes next month.
For Daughtry fans, the singer remains active on multiple fronts. The band has released new music on their current label, Big Machine Records, including the single “Artificial.” In addition to recording, Daughtry is promoting the single and performing live: the band recently began an acoustic-focused series of dates billed as the Bare Bones Tour, offering stripped-down interpretations of their catalog and connecting directly with audiences in an intimate setting.
This episode—being approached by Joe Perry to potentially front Aerosmith—offers an interesting glimpse into the intersections between mainstream television fame and classic rock culture. It also highlights how established acts sometimes explore unconventional options when facing lineup uncertainty. For Chris Daughtry, the call served as both a career compliment and a moment of clarity about where he wanted to remain: leading his own band and continuing to build Daughtry’s musical legacy rather than stepping into the shadow of another iconic frontman.
Whether viewed as a what-if moment, a flattering interruption, or a clear confirmation of artistic priorities, the story underscores the mutual respect among artists at different stages of their careers. Chris Daughtry’s polite but firm decision respected both his own limitations and his admiration for Steven Tyler, while Joe Perry’s outreach reflected Aerosmith’s willingness to consider bold alternatives in a turbulent moment. In the end, both parties returned to their chosen paths: Daughtry with his band and new music, and Aerosmith moving forward toward their farewell tour plans.
