Kellie Pickler breaks silence after husband’s death by suicide
Kellie Pickler has issued a public statement following the death of her husband, Kyle Jacobs, who died by suicide at age 49 on February 17. The country singer—known for her time on American Idol and Dancing with the Stars—shared her thoughts and gratitude as she begins to process the loss.
In a message released to the press, Pickler thanked friends, family and fans for their support during what she described as an incredibly difficult period. Her statement conveyed appreciation for the many calls, letters and messages she has received and acknowledged how much those gestures have meant to her and helped her cope.
“The darkest time of my life”
“One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis, if you don’t know what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still,’” Pickler wrote. She said she has chosen to follow his advice and take time to be still and grieve privately.
She expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of concern and support: “Thank you to my family, friends, and supporters, for the countless letters, calls, and messages that you have sent my way. It has truly touched my soul and it’s helping me get through the darkest time in my life. As many of you have told me, you are all in my prayers.”
Pickler also announced plans for a private memorial to honor her husband’s life. She said she is planning an intimate memorial later this fall, noting that this quiet, reflective gathering is what Kyle would have wanted. She closed her message with a brief sign-off: “Love & Blessings, Kellie.”
Jacobs died of a gunshot wound according to autopsy records
Autopsy records from the Davidson County Medical Examiner indicate that Jacobs’ death was the result of an intraoral shotgun wound. The medical examiner’s report, completed the day after his death, listed the manner of death as self-inflicted. Toxicology testing reportedly found no drugs in his system at the time of death.
The autopsy noted Jacobs’ medical history, including prior issues described in the report, and characterized the fatal injury as self-inflicted. According to media accounts of the incident, the shooting occurred in an upstairs bedroom or office inside the couple’s home. Authorities have said Pickler was asleep and woke up shortly before discovering her husband missing; when she and an assistant could not open the upstairs door, they called 911.
Pickler and Jacobs were married in 2011 and shared their lives publicly at times, including on a reality television series that documented aspects of their relationship and home life. Jacobs worked as a songwriter in country music and had co-written songs for several notable artists, including Tim McGraw, Kelly Clarkson, Darius Rucker and Garth Brooks, among others.
The news of Jacobs’ death sparked an outpouring of condolences from fans and colleagues in the music community. Pickler’s statement underscored her need for time and privacy as she grieves and prepares to honor her husband’s memory with the planned intimate memorial later in the year.
As she takes time to be still and reflect, Pickler asked for continued privacy and appreciation for the many messages of support that have arrived from across the country. She emphasized that those messages have been a source of comfort as she navigates the immediate aftermath of this profound loss.
