Adam Lambert pleased to meet Kate Middleton at ‘Together at Christmas’ concert
Adam Lambert appeared at the Princess of Wales’s third annual Together at Christmas carol concert, performing inside the historic Westminster Abbey. The American Idol alum was one of several artists invited to the intimate event, which took place last Friday and brought performers and guests together for a reflective seasonal service.
Lambert said he was honored to meet Catherine, Princess of Wales, before the performance. He described the moment as warm and gracious, noting that the Princess had personally invited the artists she wanted to appear at the service and that it was lovely to speak with her ahead of the concert.
On stage, Adam Lambert sang a duet of “The Christmas Song” with British singer-songwriter Beverly Knight. Their performance came before a Bible reading delivered by Prince William. The location itself added significance: Westminster Abbey is not only a magnificent venue but also the same abbey where Kate and William were married in 2011 and where King Charles was crowned in May.
Performing in such a revered and solemn space was a marked contrast to the raucous arenas and outdoor crowds Lambert often plays as a solo rock artist and as the frontman for Queen. He described the atmosphere as very still and calming, saying that the hush in the Abbey gave his energy a softer quality and made the song feel almost like a lullaby.
A longtime admirer of historical buildings, Lambert said the Abbey was his “sweet spot.” After rehearsal he took time for a quiet self-guided tour, soaking in the architecture and the deep sense of history. He spoke with enthusiasm about the Abbey’s remarkable tombs and memorials — monarchs, poets and other storied figures — calling the experience breathtaking and noting how overwhelming the layers of history felt in that space.
Lambert added that performing at Westminster Abbey was a special honor, explaining that it’s a place he has seen many times on television and in photographs but had never visited in person until this event. The combination of the Abbey’s scale, its craftsmanship and the sense of continuity made the evening particularly moving for him.
The “Together at Christmas” concert will air on UK’s ITV and ITVX on Christmas Eve
Lambert spoke about how this close-range encounter with the royal family differed from previous occasions. He recalled performing during the Queen’s Jubilee, though on that occasion the royals were farther away in the crowd. This Westminster Abbey appearance gave him a more personal connection to the event and the people attending, and he hoped the televised broadcast would spread Christmas cheer to viewers tuning in on Christmas Eve.
The Together at Christmas service was a ticketed event with a relatively small guest list, limited to just a few thousand attendees, but it will reach a much wider audience when it airs on the UK channel ITV and streams on ITVX on Christmas Eve. While the broadcast will bring the service to homes across the UK and beyond, fans will inevitably share clips and performances online after the show.
Reflecting on the invitation, Lambert said it was a flattering and meaningful honor to be asked by Princess Kate to sing at this special occasion. For an artist accustomed to arenas and festival stages, the opportunity to perform a gentle, intimate set in such an iconic setting offered a memorable and distinctly different holiday experience.
Between the duet with Beverly Knight, the royal readings and the architectural grandeur of Westminster Abbey, the Together at Christmas concert provided a quietly powerful moment of seasonal reflection. For Adam Lambert, meeting the Princess of Wales and performing in that environment combined his love of music, history and meaningful live performance in a way he described as genuinely moving.
