Chris Daughtry and his band score their first No. 1 at Active Rock in 15 years with latest single “Artificial”

Daughtry have reached a major new milestone: their Big Machine Records debut single, “Artificial,” has climbed to No. 1 at Active Rock this week. The achievement marks both the band’s first entry into the Active Rock/Mainstream Rock format and their first No. 1 single in 15 years, topping both Billboard and Mediabase airplay tallies.

“Artificial” introduces what the band describes as a refreshed sonic direction, anchored by frontman and American Idol season 5 alum Chris Daughtry and his powerful lead vocals. The accompanying music video is cinematic in scope, depicting Daughtry confronting a cyborg-like clone amid crumbling cityscapes and falling embers. The visual frames the song as a cautionary tale about the perils of a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, underlining the track’s dramatic tension and modern themes.

On the Feb. 17-dated Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, “Artificial” rose 2-1 to claim the top spot, marking Daughtry’s first time at No. 1 on that chart. The band’s presence on Mainstream Rock extends back 17 years, first appearing with “It’s Not Over,” which reached No. 5 in March 2007. Across that period the group has accumulated eight entries on the format, showing a steady connection with rock radio audiences.

Before “Artificial,” Daughtry’s highest placing on Mainstream Rock Airplay was “Heavy Is the Crown,” which peaked at No. 4 in 2021. While this is the band’s first Mainstream Rock Airplay No. 1, Daughtry’s chart history includes numerous other radio successes: four No. 1s on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart between 2007 and 2009 with “It’s Not Over,” “Home,” “Feels Like Tonight” and “No Surprise,” as well as No. 1 positions on Pop Airplay and Adult Contemporary for “It’s Not Over” and “Home,” respectively.

Chris Daughtry first rose to national prominence as a contestant on American Idol season 5 in 2006, finishing the competition in fourth place. Since then, he and his band have built a catalog that bridges mainstream pop-rock and harder-edged rock radio formats, and “Artificial” represents both a stylistic step forward and a notable return to the top of the rock charts.

“Artificial” continues to climb across airplay and streaming charts

Beyond its No. 1 spot on Mainstream Rock Airplay, “Artificial” also climbed 14-13 on the all-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, registering 2.7 million audience impressions—an increase of 13% according to Luminate. The song previously reached a peak position of No. 12 on the Jan. 13 Rock & Alternative Airplay chart.

On the multimetric Hot Hard Rock Songs list dated Feb. 10, “Artificial” was listed at No. 12. Streaming contributed to the track’s momentum as well: the song earned 346,000 official U.S. streams for the week of Jan. 26–Feb. 1, supporting its growing radio footprint and audience reach.

“Artificial” is the band’s current single and arrives after the group’s last full-length release, Dearly Beloved, which debuted at No. 4 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart dated Oct. 2, 2021, and has amassed 88,000 equivalent album units to date. The new single underscores the band’s continued relevance across both rock and mainstream radio formats while signaling a renewed creative chapter.

Tour activity will keep Daughtry visible on the road this spring, as the band joins select U.S. dates with Breaking Benjamin. Fans interested in concert dates, ticketing and official updates should consult the band’s official channels for the latest information.

This No. 1 at Active Rock represents an important moment for Daughtry: a successful genre crossover into mainstream rock radio, renewed streaming traction, and a striking visual companion that amplifies the song’s themes. With “Artificial” leading the way, the band appears poised to reach new listeners while satisfying long-time fans.
