The Amazing Race 36 Recap: Premiere Live Blog
The season premiere of The Amazing Race 36 aired tonight on CBS, launching a new season of globe-trotting challenges, teamwork, and high-stakes navigation. The first leg began in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where Phil Keoghan greeted 12 teams on the beach and set the tone for an intense competition that will feature no non-elimination legs and visits to two countries the show has never raced in before.
Teams introduced themselves quickly before racing to their first clues. Highlights among the contestants included married duo Sean and Michelle, owners of Double Dutch Aerobics with Michelle a world champion in double dutch; 25-year-old identical twins Anthony and Bailey, who brought youthful energy as self-described “beach boys”; single father Chris and his daughter Mary; nurse anesthetist couple Amber and Vinny; best friends-turned-pilots Juan and Shane; long-time viewers Maya and Rohan, both summer camp aquatics directors; and several other pairs with varied backgrounds and motivations to compete.
Meeting more teams
Additional teams introduced included Ricky and César, a boyfriend pair for whom appearing on The Amazing Race was a dream; cousins Kishori and Karishma, who are close like sisters; and mother-and-son team Angie and Danny, sharing an emotional moment as Angie watched Danny chase his dream. Married veterans Derek and Shelisa, Rod and Leticia (with Rod a former NFL player), and firefighter duo Sunny and Bizzy also joined the field.
After a brief on-beach start, teams scattered to parked cars to drive into town for their first Detour. The two options tested different skills: “Pick ‘Em Up” required transporting rocking-horse toys down a cobblestone street, while “Pin ‘Em Down” tasked teams with a memory challenge matching luchador masks after a masked demonstration. Ricky and César were first to find the clue box and chose the memory challenge, with Rod and Leticia, Kishori and Karishma, and several others eventually arriving at either Detour. Maya and Rohan struggled early after getting lost, which put them at a significant disadvantage.
Joining forces on a detour
Teams attempting “Pick ‘Em Up” battled the uneven cobblestones while carrying the rocking horses; Anthony & Bailey, Yvonne & Melissa, Amber & Vinny, and others all contended with the physical hurdle. Those doing “Pin ‘Em Down” had to pay close attention to the luchador demonstration—Ricky & César and Rod & Leticia both failed initial attempts and had to rewatch the presentation. Limited capacity for the rocking-horse task forced some teams, including Chris & Mary and later Juan & Shane, to switch to the memory challenge when no horses remained.
By the time most teams completed their Detours, Ricky & César and Rod & Leticia had pulled ahead to the Roadblock: a lasso challenge where racers had to hop through seven loops without touching the rope. The challenge combined coordination and focus, and it reshuffled the field as teams arrived at the Plaza de los Arcos del Malecon Pit Stop.
Completing a roadblock
Rod and César tackled the lasso Roadblock early and both completed it, allowing Rod & Leticia to reach the Pit Stop first. Derek & Shelisa, Kishori & Karishma, Angie & Danny, Yvonne & Melissa, and several other teams worked through the costume and timing requirements—one misstep saw Karishma initially forget the required handkerchief and have to redo the task. Notably, some teams experienced delays from getting lost en route to challenges: Amber & Vinny and Maya & Rohan were among those who fell behind due to navigation issues.
Several key moments unfolded at the Roadblock and Pit Stop: Shane moved quickly to pass other teams, Sean—despite his double dutch background—struggled with the lasso, and Anthony delivered a fast performance that helped his team advance. Vinny and Mary completed the Roadblock at different times despite arriving together, and Sunny finished notably quickly, highlighting the variety of strengths across the cast.
The first team arrives
Rod & Leticia crossed the finish line first at Plaza de los Arcos del Malecon, greeted by Phil Keoghan. Even as the first-place team, Phil reminded them that the race was ongoing and handed them a clue to continue racing. Ricky & César followed closely in second, while Derek & Shelisa and Juan & Shane also placed near the top. In the closing stretch, Chris & Mary and Amber & Vinny battled to avoid elimination, but both were told at the Pit Stop that they would remain in the race that night.
Episode Summary
After a fast-paced leg full of Detours, a tricky memory challenge, and a physically demanding lasso Roadblock, Maya & Rohan—who struggled after getting lost early—were the last team to arrive at the Pit Stop and were eliminated. The premiere established early themes for the season: navigation matters as much as speed, limited task capacity creates strategic choices, and small mistakes can quickly cost teams their spot in the race.
