American Idol 2025: Everything to Know About the Head-to-Head Round, Including Photo Spoilers
Sunday night (April 6) American Idol closed with results that initially seemed puzzling — intentionally so. After 62 contestants performed on stage with a full band during the Showcase Round, judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan began making cuts. The episode culminated in a major twist: instead of revealing the full Top 24, the judges immediately advanced a single group of four contestants straight through.

Canaan James Hill, Gabby Samone, Zaylie Windsor and Mattie Pruitt were moved directly into the Top 24. At the same time, 16 contestants were eliminated on the spot, leaving 42 singers. The judges confirmed that those remaining would move on to the newly promoted Head-to-Head round to compete for the final 20 spots in the Top 24.
Although producers are promoting the Head-to-Head round as a new element, the format is essentially an iteration of the familiar Duets Round from past seasons — a stage that historically followed initial solo performances and preceded the showstopper segment during Hollywood Week. What’s different this year is the order and presentation: familiar stages rearranged into a fresh sequence, with higher stakes for the contestants involved.
In the Head-to-Head round, the remaining contestants have 24 hours to find a duet partner, choose a song, rehearse and then perform for the judges. At the end of the round, the judges will select the Top 20 who will join the four artists already advanced. Next week, the show will broadcast the two-part Top 24 round, which was filmed at the Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii.

Jelly Roll Joins the Cast as “Artist in Residence”

Country artist Jelly Roll will join the series as an Artist in Residence for the remainder of the season. He’s working closely with contestants during the Head-to-Head selection process, offering guidance while they choose partners and songs. In a recent interview, he described his role: “The show brings me in when the kids are picking their head-to-head songs, so I am in the trenches with these babies. I watch them pick their songs. I give them advice and I catch them picking their partners. Some of them probably picked the wrong partner.”
A Few More Spoiler Details from Jelly Roll
Jelly Roll observed communication and song-choice issues among some duos. He recounted advising one group that, at this point in the competition, choosing a song both partners feel comfortable performing together is critical. “Take it or leave it,” he told them, warning that an imbalance could leave one singer carrying most of the number. He also noted a pairing where the female partner knew the song well while the male partner did not; as a result, she ended up carrying the performance — and, as often happens on American Idol, a plot twist took place afterward.
Disney’s publicity photos for the episode reveal the duet matchups fans will see perform. Below are the official Head-to-Head pairings and the photos released for the episode.
