American Idol Season 13 Omaha Auditions: Live Blog and Videos

It’s the final night of American Idol Season XIII auditions in Omaha, Nebraska. I’m live-blogging the 60-minute episode, covering the standout moments, surprising decisions, and the singers who advanced to Hollywood.

Compared to Idol’s last visit to Omaha in 2007, which yielded that season’s winner David Cook, tonight felt weaker overall. The talent pool seemed thinner and the judges’ threshold shifted: at one point Harry changed a “no” to a “yes,” a rare move for him. Jennifer Lopez continued to advance many contestants, sometimes pushing singers through who lacked readiness, while Keith Urban wasn’t always as strict as he might have been. That dynamic produced a few questionable yeses tonight.

Two auditions felt especially premature: 15-year-old Carrie Underwood soundalike Madison Walker, whose polished but unoriginal take on a familiar song felt underdeveloped, and 18-year-old Andrina Brogden, whose voice showed promise but whose lack of confidence could hold her back. On the positive side, the night offered several memorable performers: country throwback Tessa Kate, gospel-tinged belter Paula Hunt, and the sweet-voiced Casey McQuillen. An honorable mention goes to Tyler Marshall for blending gospel and R&B influences.

One more note on the auditions overall: the episodes were well-shot and edited, and the judges were largely informative and entertaining. There were a lot of contestants who accompanied themselves on guitar, which I didn’t mind—many musicians naturally play while they sing. If anything, the presence of instruments reflects the contestants’ musicianship rather than a flaw.

Up next: Hollywood. But first, a quick recap of tonight’s auditions and judge reactions.

Quaid Edwards – 21, college senior. Song: “Change Is Gonna Come.” Quaid has showbiz roots—his mother led a country group and once worked with Keith—but his performance mixed weak upper-register notes with stronger lower-range moments. His phrasing and vocal control were inconsistent, though his raw appeal and emotional moment with his mother won the judges over. Verdict: 3 yeses.

Simon Hauck – 17. Song: “Sold.” Simon’s country-leaning attempt felt corny and vocally weak. Verdict: 3 nos.

Madison Walker – 15. Song: “Before He Cheats” (Carrie Underwood). Madison has a clear tone and strong control, but her performance closely imitated Carrie’s phrasing and style without adding originality. While Jennifer and Keith voted to advance her, Harry thoughtfully declined, warning she wasn’t ready for Hollywood’s demands. Verdict: 2 yeses, 1 no (Harry).

Alyssa Siebken – Song: “No Hands.” Alyssa offered a playful, sung version of a rap track, showing good breath control and lyrical agility. The approach felt familiar as a gimmick, and Harry questioned whether her voice was strong enough to carry further. Verdict: 2 yeses, 1 no (Harry).

Tyler Gurwicz – Song: “Set Fire to the Rain.” Tyler’s dramatic approach and tone didn’t land for this viewer; his phrasing felt forced. After a second chance and brief re-performance, the judges were divided. Ultimately Harry and Jennifer voted yes while Keith voted no. Verdict: 2 yeses, 1 no.

The judges also shared humorous and candid moments between auditions, reacting to odd performances and the familiar parade of hopefuls. Harry was notably blunt about contestants who plead for advancement, and the panel found comic relief in a few eccentric moments from the waiting room.

Tyler Marshall – Song: “Proud Mary.” A charismatic performer with strong gospel and soul influences, Tyler impressed with his stage presence and vocal power. The judges praised his energy and control. Verdict: 3 yeses.

CJ Jones – Song: “Stand By Me.” CJ brought groove and charm to his audition, engaging Harry in playful banter and movement. His steady performance and charisma earned unanimous approval. Verdict: 3 yeses.

Dajontae Lenear & Dylan Becker – Both contestants showed distinctive styles, with Dajontae demonstrating enthusiasm and Dylan delivering a polished performance. Each impressed the judges enough to move forward. Verdicts: 3 yeses for both.

Paula Hunt – 20. Song: “All I Could Do Was Cry” (Etta James). A vocalist with a strong gospel foundation, Paula sang with effortless power and tasteful phrasing. Her performance was deeply emotional, especially when she spoke about singing for troops and her mother’s health struggles. The judges praised her elegance and control. Verdict: 3 yeses.

Andrina Brogden – 18. Song: “Halo.” Andrina has a distinctive tone and a presence that keeps listeners engaged, but her audition was tentative and restrained on the big notes. The judges acknowledged the quality of her voice but debated whether her nerves would limit her. Verdict: 2 yeses, 1 no (Harry).

Christian Scholl – Song: “On the Road Again.” A square-dance caller who showed personality in the waiting room, Christian’s singing ultimately lacked tunefulness and failed to impress the panel. Verdict: 3 nos.

Casey McQuillen – Song: “Skyscraper.” Casey offered a sweet tone, controlled delivery, and a pleasing vocal break—qualities the judges felt would allow her to blossom with guidance. Verdict: 3 yeses.

Tessa Kate – Song: “Folsom Prison.” A Branson, Missouri performer with retro country styling, Tessa delivered an authentic throwback country performance with tasteful guitar work and a Dolly-like quiver in her voice. While some judges worried the competition might overshadow her, they also felt she has a distinct lane that could protect her. Verdict: 3 yeses.

Tonight, 21 hopefuls advanced from Omaha to Hollywood, bringing the season’s total to 212 contestants moving forward. Overall, this final audition night mixed raw potential, polished but derivative performances, and a few genuinely exciting voices. As Hollywood Week approaches, the show moves from regional auditions to the high-stakes rounds where true contenders will emerge.
