American Idol season 4 winner Carrie Underwood to join Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie on judges panel

American Idol has reportedly selected season 4 winner Carrie Underwood to take Katy Perry’s place on the judges’ panel. Underwood is expected to join returning judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan for the upcoming season.

Sources indicate Carrie and her team are in the final stages of negotiating a contract with ABC/Disney to join the long-running singing competition. The network planned an announcement on Thursday, August 1, and Carrie is scheduled to perform on Good Morning America the following day. Her appearance on GMA, which raised questions when first announced because she had no new music to promote, now appears tied to the Idol news. Carrie previously emceed the CMA Awards for ABC in 2008 and 2019.

ABC confirmed that Carrie Underwood will join Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan on the American Idol judging panel. The announcement highlights that her return coincides with the 20th anniversary of her iconic win on the show.

Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, said the upcoming season marks two decades since Carrie captured America’s hearts on Idol and launched a multi‑GRAMMY Award-winning career. He noted that as a former contestant and established musical force, Carrie brings a distinct and meaningful perspective to the series, calling her return a “full‑circle moment” for the show and its longtime viewers.

Megan Wolflick, showrunner and executive producer of American Idol, emphasized that Carrie is the first Idol alum to join the judging panel. Wolflick described Underwood as the most successful Idol winner to date and praised her as an ideal fit who embodies the show’s Cinderella story. She added that aspiring contestants will benefit from guidance by someone who has experienced Idol’s journey firsthand and expressed excitement about Carrie reuniting with the Idol family.

Auditions for the upcoming season will begin Monday, August 12, with the return of “Idol Across America,” a live virtual search that spans all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Through this initiative, hopefuls can audition remotely and perform live for an American Idol producer from anywhere in the country on official audition dates. Successful virtual applicants may advance to in-person judge auditions. Open call dates will also be available, and the show has said auditions will be open internationally to eligible performers. More details are provided on the show’s official auditions page.

Carrie previously balked at the idea of “judging” fellow contestants

Carrie Underwood has appeared on Idol before in mentor and guest roles—most notably in 2018 and again in 2022—but she has often expressed discomfort with delivering harsh critiques. For example, during season 20 she initially planned to select songs for contestants but ultimately allowed them to choose their own, showing reluctance to be overly prescriptive. In interviews she has acknowledged that the idea of being strictly critical was difficult for her, which made news of her joining the permanent judging panel notable.

Will Carrie continue singing the Sunday Night Football theme for NBC?

Another common question is whether Carrie will maintain her role singing the Sunday Night Football theme for NBC. There’s no obvious scheduling conflict: American Idol’s season typically begins after the NFL season concludes, so it is possible for her to continue both commitments.

Carrie’s decision to rejoin American Idol contrasts with other Idol alumni who later affiliated with rival networks or shows. Kelly Clarkson, the series’ first winner, became a pop star who later built a strong relationship with NBC—hosting a daytime talk show and serving as a coach on The Voice. Carrie, by comparison, has remained closely associated with Idol over the years.

With Carrie on the panel, American Idol’s judging lineup will include two country music stars, which aligns with the show’s historic success in producing country artists. Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood together bring deep industry experience and credibility within the genre. At the same time, some viewers may notice the departure of a pop‑focused perspective following Katy Perry’s exit.

Carrie Underwood won American Idol season 4 in 2005. Simon Cowell predicted at the time that she would become the biggest star the franchise produced—a forecast that, given her enduring popularity and record sales in the United States, many would say proved accurate.

Katy Perry stepped away from American Idol after seven seasons to focus on her next musical era.
