Survivor Season 36 Ghost Island Finale: Recap and Live Blog

The season finale of Survivor: Ghost Island aired live on CBS, with Jeff Probst hosting from Los Angeles. The Final Six—Sebastian, Donathan, Angela, Laurel, Wendell, and Domenick—faced the last rounds of strategy, challenges and Jury scrutiny to decide who would claim the title of Sole Survivor.

After Tribal Council, Domenick and Wendell regrouped at camp, frustrated by Donathan’s shifting loyalties. Donathan admitted he’d been nervous but intended to play his own game. Sebastian, who had been riding with the stronger players, revealed he had an extra vote advantage and said he wanted to stop hiding and make a move.

The next morning the castaways competed in a large skull-shaped maze immunity challenge, collecting bags of puzzle pieces and assembling a jigsaw to win safety and a food reward. Wendell completed his puzzle first and earned immunity. He chose Sebastian and Angela to join him on reward, a pick that irritated Laurel, who called it a strategic move that brought two of her biggest threats away from camp.

Back at camp, alliances shifted. Sebastian, Angela and Donathan plotted to target Domenick, and Sebastian told the pair about his extra vote. But Angela later informed Domenick of that plan and revealed Sebastian’s advantage. With the bluff exposed, Domenick confronted Donathan at Tribal Council and theatrically brandished both a real and a fake idol. After a heated exchange and several accusations, the votes were cast. Sebastian received the majority and was voted out, becoming the eighth juror; he did not use his extra vote.

The following day brought another immunity challenge, an obstacle course with puzzle pieces to build a pyramid. Wendell again claimed immunity, continuing his streak of clutch performances. With challenge threat and jury math in mind, Domenick considered whom to bring to the Final Four. He weighed Donathan’s challenge weakness against Laurel’s social connections and ultimately admitted uncertainty about the right move.

At the next Tribal Council the tension rose. Domenick played his hidden immunity idol on himself, while Wendell played his idol on Laurel. The votes landed for Donathan, and he was eliminated, becoming the ninth member of the jury. In the live studio after his exit, Donathan spoke about how the game changed him and revealed that pop star Sia, moved by his story, donated $10,000 to help his family.

On Day 38 the Final Four faced the last individual immunity game: a balance-and-stacking contest on a wobbly beam using a long tool to place balls on a tower. Domenick’s tower ultimately held up first, earning him final immunity and the power to choose whom to bring to the Final Tribal Council.

Before the Final Tribal Council, the four visited Ghost Island, where Domenick was reminded of past Survivor missteps through urns representing seasons where choosing the wrong finalist backfired. That symbolism weighed on his decision. After discussions about who could win a fire-making tiebreaker, Domenick announced he would take Laurel to the Final 3 and force Angela and Wendell into a fire-making challenge for the last spot.

Wendell and Angela faced off in the fire-making duel. Wendell, who had the faster fire-making skills, ignited his flame and burned through the rope first. Angela was eliminated and joined the jury, bringing the jury roster to ten.

Final Three: Domenick, Wendell and Laurel prepared for Final Tribal Council. Each argued their case before the jury, highlighting social bonds, strategic moves, loyalty and gameplay. Laurel emphasized her steady role and her reputation for saving and voting with the alliance at key moments. Domenick addressed the controversy of his aggressive move at a previous Tribal and offered an apology for the tone of that play while defending the strategic intent. Wendell described his social game, his camp contributions and key moves, including using an idol to protect an ally.

When the jury voted, the result produced an unprecedented tie: five votes for Domenick and five for Wendell. Under the tie-breaking rules, the final decision fell to the last remaining non-jury player, Laurel. In a dramatic moment, Laurel cast the deciding vote for Wendell Holland.

At the live reunion, Wendell reflected on his win, crediting his social game and consistent play. Laurel explained her difficult choice, citing her personal relationship with Wendell and his strong social connections with the jury. Domenick, Michael, Chris and other players discussed rivalries, respect and memorable moves from the season. Jeff and the panel revisited big strategic moments, including Domenick’s idol plays and the Sebastian blindside, while contestants and returning players offered perspective on risk and reward in gameplay.

The finale closed with a preview of the next season’s theme, Survivor: David vs. Goliath, and the official wrap of Survivor: Ghost Island. Wendell’s victory marked a culmination of strong challenge performances, solid social bonds and timely strategic decisions—earning him the title of Sole Survivor.
