Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Seal has been cast as Pontius Pilate in the live television musical event The Passion, joining a star-studded ensemble that includes Chris Daughtry, Prince Royce and Trisha Yearwood. The two-hour production will air live from New Orleans on Palm Sunday, March 20, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM ET (PT tape-delayed) on FOX.
Seal’s casting adds a distinctive voice to the production as he takes on the role of Pontius Pilate. He joins an already announced lineup: actor and host Tyler Perry will serve as narrator and host; Jencarlos Canela will portray Jesus Christ; Chris Daughtry will appear as Judas; Prince Royce will portray the disciple Peter; and country star Trisha Yearwood will perform as Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The Passion is written by Peter Barsocchini, known for his work on the High School Musical franchise. The production presents the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life through selected biblical passages paired with contemporary popular songs. Music for the event has been arranged specially by executive producer and music producer Adam Anders, whose credits include work on Glee and other high-profile musical productions. The show sets the ancient story in a modern context, blending scripture and contemporary music to tell the narrative of the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate, his crucifixion and subsequent resurrection.
The televised event will be staged across several iconic locations in New Orleans, creating a dynamic, citywide spectacle. A highlighted element of the production is a procession involving about a thousand people carrying a 20-foot illuminated cross from outside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to the live performance stage at Woldenberg Park on the banks of the Mississippi River. This procession is intended to be a central, visually powerful moment that connects the city’s landscape with the dramatic arc of the story.
Producers emphasize the live format and contemporary musical arrangements as key elements designed to engage a broad television audience, blending theatrical staging with the immediacy of live broadcast. With a cast that spans pop, rock and country music, along with experienced theatrical performers, the production aims to present a reverent yet modern interpretation of a well-known story to viewers tuning in on Palm Sunday.
For viewers planning to watch, the broadcast will air on FOX at the scheduled time, offering a live, large-scale musical interpretation of the Passion narrative performed across New Orleans’ notable public venues. The event’s combination of established hit songs reinterpreted for the show and original staging choices seeks to deliver both emotional resonance and visual spectacle.
