American Idol Top 10 finalist Alyssa Wray has taken on a new stage role. The powerful-voiced performer is starring in Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World at The Gateway Performing Arts Center in Bellport, New York.
Songs for a New World, written and composed by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, opened its run on Wednesday, July 14 and continues through July 31 at The Gateway. Originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1995, the show is a song-cycle musical that blends contemporary musical styles with emotional storytelling.
Alyssa marked the first preview with an upbeat post on social media, sharing a photo of herself onstage and celebrating the milestone with fans. In the days leading up to opening night, she also posted a clip from the final day of technical rehearsal, performing a portion of the song “I’m Not Afraid of Anything.”
The production’s ensemble includes Christian Douglas, Jordan Goodsell, Caleb Mitchell, Mary Kate Moore and Morgan Billings Smith, joining Wray to present the show’s interwoven stories and musical scenes.
Songs for a New World is a moving collection of powerful songs
As described on The Gateway’s website, Songs for a New World is “a moving collection of powerful songs that examines life, love and the choices that we make.” The score ranges widely in style, taking audiences from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship to a luxurious New York penthouse, and presenting an array of characters facing pivotal moments. It focuses on decisions made in a single instant—moments when characters must choose a path, take a stand, or turn back. The musical’s carefully crafted score, performed by a diverse and dynamic cast, aims to make the evening a memorable theatrical experience.
Tickets for the Gateway production are available through the theatre’s box office and online. The venue currently does not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for attendance; however, per New York State guidelines the theatre asks that unvaccinated audience members wear an appropriate face mask indoors at all times.
Alyssa set for “A Night at the Theatre” on August 5
In addition to her role at The Gateway, Alyssa Wray is scheduled to appear at the Boyle County Performing Arts Center on August 5 for a concert billed as “A Night at the Theatre with Alyssa Wray.” The performance celebrates the opening of the new theatre affiliated with Boyle County High School’s theatre arts program. Wray, a Kentucky native, expressed heartfelt enthusiasm about returning to her home state to help inaugurate the space she and her classmates once dreamed of having.
In a social media message about the event, Alyssa recalled how, while she was in school, she and her peers longed for a dedicated theatre to stage productions. After years of planning and construction, that dream has become a reality, and she said she was honored to be invited back to officially open the venue.
Tickets for the Boyle County concert are affordably priced at $20, making the event accessible to community members and fans alike. This appearance follows Wray’s growing theatrical and musical career, which includes her time on American Idol and a range of public performances since the show.
For theatergoers interested in either production, consider checking performance schedules and box office information directly with the hosting venues. Both engagements—Songs for a New World at The Gateway and Alyssa’s homecoming concert at the Boyle County Performing Arts Center—offer opportunities to hear Wray’s distinctive voice in live theatrical settings.
