American Idol 2012 winner Phillip Phillips sings ‘Dancing with Your Shadows’ on Today
After a five-year gap between studio releases, American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips has returned with a new album titled Drift Back. The singer-songwriter appeared on the Today show on Thursday, July 20, performing “Dancing with Your Shadows” as part of the program’s Citi Music series. The television appearance marked a key stop in his promotion of the record and offered viewers a direct look at the personal themes that shape his latest material.
Phillips described how his life in recent years—particularly becoming a father—has reshaped his priorities and influenced his music. “You go through a lot when you have a kid. It changes all of your priorities, your responsibilities, everything,” he said, reflecting on how fatherhood affected his songwriting and perspective. He also spoke warmly about his son Patch, calling him “an awesome little boy—most days!” and noting that the new music represents the highs and lows of the past five years.

Written in collaboration with Quinn Lewis and Todd Clark, “Dancing with Your Shadows” was inspired by Phillips’ wife, Hannah. The song explores the experience of confronting a loved one’s illness and the emotional limits of what one person can do in the face of that struggle. During interviews about the track, Phillips explained that his wife has been dealing with ongoing health issues, and that watching her cope while feeling unable to fix everything was a significant emotional driver for the song. “I want to make things as perfect as I can for her, but me realizing I can’t is very tough for me,” he said. “I came to realize I have to just be there for her. Sometimes not even saying anything. Just being there and go through it all with her.”
The Today performance highlighted the intimate and earnest qualities of the song. Phillips’ delivery emphasized a raw, lived-in vocal texture paired with straightforward instrumentation, reflecting the album’s broader emphasis on authentic storytelling. Listeners new to Drift Back will find that the record leans into personal reflection, balancing moments of resilience with candid admissions of vulnerability.
In a press statement about Drift Back, Phillips framed the album as a reflection on both triumphs and setbacks. He said the collection “reflects the wins and losses I experienced…I have learned, loved, and lived. I am excited to drift back to what I’ve always loved with my fans and that is music. I am so proud of this album and how it puts my soul into song and brings you all into my life a little bit more, for better or for worse. Let’s drift back to the good stuff.”
Phillip’s official tour begins in October
In addition to promoting Drift Back on television, Phillips has remained active in the broader music community. Earlier this year he served as a songwriting mentor during American Idol’s Hollywood Week, sharing his expertise with emerging talent. He also performed “Gone Gone Gone” for the PBS Capitol Fourth special during Memorial Day weekend in Washington, D.C., reinforcing his connection to both fans and national events.
Phillips will take his new material on the road later this year. He begins a short run of shows later in July, with a few additional dates scheduled for August, before launching his official tour in October. These performances will offer fans an opportunity to hear songs from Drift Back in a live setting and to experience the personal stories behind the music.
Drift Back arrives as a candid statement from an artist who has navigated professional success, family life, and personal challenges. The album and its lead performances, including the Today appearance, emphasize Phillips’ commitment to honest songwriting and to sharing moments from his life through music. Whether encountering the record for the first time or following his career since American Idol, listeners can expect an album rooted in lived experience and delivered with heartfelt sincerity.
