American Idol 2018: Auditions End as Hollywood Week Kicks Off

American Idol Auditions: Final Night in Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City and Savannah

Tonight (March 25), American Idol continues its nationwide search for the next music superstar with the final round of open auditions. The judges—Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie—will hear hopeful singers in Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City and Savannah as contestants compete for a golden ticket to Hollywood. Ryan Seacrest returns as host for the episode.

Episode five features a diverse mix of contestants who bring different backgrounds and ambitions to the stage. Viewers will see a choreographer from Tennessee, a hostess from Colorado and a personal assistant from Alabama performing for the judges, each hoping to advance to the next phase of the competition. This episode also includes the television debut of drag artist Ada Vox, who previously advanced to the Hollywood rounds in season 12 performing under the name Adam Sanders.

Following the auditions, American Idol moves into Hollywood Week, a critical stage where contestants face intense evaluation through solo and group performances. Hollywood Week typically includes multiple rounds designed to test vocal ability, stage presence, teamwork and versatility. In past seasons, contestants and fans have referred to this sequence of rounds—packed with rehearsals, callbacks and eliminations—as “hell week.” By the end of Hollywood Week, only a fraction of the original auditioners remain; producers have indicated that approximately 50 singers will move forward from that grueling stretch.

To celebrate the Los Angeles transition, the production arranged a special promotional helicopter flight featuring four large, 15-foot-tall cutouts of the judges and the host—Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Ryan Seacrest. The cutouts will be flown over Hollywood and the surrounding Burbank area in scheduled flights, weather permitting, with morning and evening windows: 8:00–10:00 a.m. PDT and 5:00–7:00 p.m. PDT. The stunt is intended to herald the start of Hollywood Week and draw attention to the contestants’ next challenge.

Promotional clips for the upcoming Hollywood rounds emphasize the competitive intensity contestants will encounter. One preview features Katy Perry telling the assembled hopefuls, “It’s survival of the fittest,” underscoring the pressure contestants face as they are narrowed down. The footage also gives viewers a glimpse at what to expect during the first day of Hollywood Week, including rehearsals, mentor sessions and group assignments that test singers’ ability to collaborate under time constraints.

For contestants, advancing to Hollywood means confronting several distinct challenges. Solo performances require strong vocal control and the ability to connect emotionally with the song and the audience. Group performances bring a different set of demands: harmonizing, blending vocal timbres, staging, and managing dynamics while sharing the spotlight. Judges evaluate technical skill, creativity, adaptability and stage personality as they determine who deserves to progress.

Tonight’s episode is the last chance for hopefuls to impress the judges in these regional audition cities. With only limited slots available for Hollywood Week, each performance carries high stakes. The show’s format emphasizes discovery and growth, spotlighting singers who can deliver memorable moments while also showing potential for development as artists.
