American Idol casting is opening auditions for Idol Across America as part of the show’s season 22 recruitment.
The audition process remains largely virtual, continuing the shift that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than sending production crews on nationwide audition tours, the show now evaluates singers remotely, using digital submissions and virtual callbacks. This approach reduces logistical costs and allows producers and judges to review a larger pool of contestants from their offices or homes, while still identifying standout voices for further rounds.
Audition dates for Idol Across America are scheduled to run from August 4 through September 8. The open-call sessions are organized by theme and region, and current categories include Singer/Songwriters, Country & Rock, Pop, R&B & Soul, and a specifically labeled “The South” session. Additional regional and genre-specific calls will be added as needed to cover the remainder of the country, including the West, Midwest and Northeast. The show often continues to accept and review auditions even while judges are filming in select cities, so late entries and supplemental open calls are common.
Hopefuls must be 15-29. Only former WINNERS are ineligible to audition again
Eligibility rules require hopefuls to be at least 15 years old by February 15, 2024. The season’s guidance lists acceptable birth dates as falling between June 2, 1994 and February 15, 2009. In practical terms, the program is focused on performers who fit within the 15-to-29 age range. Note that every former contestant who meets the age requirement may audition again except those who previously won the competition — once a winner, you are not eligible to re-enter.
Producers frequently welcome back contestants from past seasons who did not reach the live show rounds. These returning performers are sometimes given another opportunity to compete and progress further. For example, a past finalist returned to audition for a later season and advanced to the Hollywood round, although producers elected not to air that particular arc. Such instances demonstrate that prior audition experience does not automatically exclude someone from future participation, provided they have not been crowned a winner.
To prepare, singers should review the official casting guidelines and follow the submission instructions on the show’s casting page. Requirements typically include a recorded audition or virtual submission, proof of age and the completion of necessary casting forms. Artists are advised to present polished material that highlights their vocal strengths, genre fit and artistic identity. Since open calls are divided by genre and region, applicants should choose the session that best matches their style to maximize their chances.
Producers are likely to add more audition blocks as demand requires, so prospective contestants should monitor casting announcements for updates and new opportunities. Because the process is virtual, applicants from anywhere in the United States can usually submit a video or participate in a remote audition slot, making Idol Across America accessible to singers who cannot travel to an in-person open call.
Season 22 is slated to air mid-season on ABC. The network has officially renewed the series, but it has not confirmed the full lineup of the hosting and judging panel for the new season. Host Ryan Seacrest has said he will return to the series even as he pursues other projects, and the judging trio of Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan has not been officially reshuffled. Rumors circulated during the previous season that Katy Perry might consider stepping away, but negotiations and contract discussions can continue behind the scenes. Fans should watch for an official network announcement about the returning host and judges.
For singers interested in auditioning, start preparing now: select your best songs, record high-quality auditions, confirm eligibility, and keep an eye on casting updates. The virtual audition format makes it easier than ever to submit a polished performance from home and potentially earn a spot on one of television’s most visible singing competitions.
