Ratings Race: American Idol’s Key Demo Ratings Beat The Voice and The Masked Singer
Ratings for the week of April 16–April 22:
During the week of April 16–22, CBS’s Survivor again led the broadcast night on Wednesday, posting a 0.78 rating in the key 18–49 demo and attracting 5.2 million viewers. FOX’s The Masked Singer dipped to a season low the same night, registering a 0.48 demo and 3.4 million viewers; that episode was largely a clip show with a few new performances and no unmaskings.
ABC’s American Idol and NBC’s The Voice continued their head-to-head battle. American Idol took its Top 24 contestants to Hawaii for performances, while The Voice began its Knockout round. On Monday, American Idol won the important 18–49 demo with a 0.53 rating, slightly below the previous week, while The Voice rose marginally to a 0.45 from its prior clip-show week. Despite Idol’s advantage in the demo, The Voice drew more total viewers that night: 5.4 million versus Idol’s 4.4 million, a difference of roughly one million viewers.
The disparity between demo strength and total audience highlights a common trend: American Idol’s audience skews younger, which is particularly valuable to advertisers targeting the 18–49 demographic. By contrast, The Voice attracted a larger share of older viewers; for example, The Voice’s Adults 50+ share was 9.5 compared to American Idol’s 7.3 for the same period.
On Sunday, American Idol posted a 0.64 in the key demo, up from the previous Sunday, and drew 5.4 million viewers. That episode benefited from an NBA playoff lead-in that aired at 3 p.m. ET and delivered a strong 1.78 rating, which helped boost Sunday night audience levels. Across the week, American Idol earned the highest primetime demo ratings on both Sunday and Monday.
Looking ahead, American Idol launches its live shows on Monday, April 24. The Voice, however, will continue airing taped episodes until May 15. That gap—in which one series is live and the other remains pre-recorded—could widen the ratings gap in favor of Idol, as live programming often produces higher real-time tune-in and social engagement.
Overall, the week reinforced how programming strategy, lead-ins, and audience composition influence both demo ratings and total viewership. Idol’s younger-skewing audience gives it an edge in the 18–49 demo even when The Voice beats it in raw viewer numbers, and The Masked Singer’s clip-format episode shows how special-format broadcasts can depress seasonal averages.
