American Idol’s Noah Thompson Leaves Record Label as Fans React

American Idol 2022 winner Noah Thompson parts ways with 19/Recordings/BBR Music Group

American Idol season 20 winner Noah Thompson has reportedly parted ways with 19 Recordings and BBR Music Group. Thompson signed with the label after winning American Idol in 2022, but recent reports indicate he is no longer on the label roster.

Although Noah still appears listed on the BBR Music Group website, that listing appears out of date. According to Heavy, which confirmed the change with the label, “Noah Thompson is no longer on our roster.” A representative for Thompson responded by email to Heavy, saying Noah is “currently in a transition period in his career but rest assured he is working on some of the best music of his career and will have lots of exciting announcements soon.”

The singer’s social media activity has been limited lately. Aside from a few personal posts — including one wishing his son a happy third birthday and a recent photo of himself on a Harley-Davidson with the caption “When life brings you down, you buy a Harley” — Noah has kept a fairly low profile online.

Notably, Noah is absent from this year’s CMA Fest “Idol Hour” showcase organized by 19 Recordings, a bill that includes other recent Idol alumni such as season 19 winner Chayce Beckham, runner-up HunterGirl, season 21’s Colin Stough, and season 22 runner-ups Jack Blocker and Will Moseley. HunterGirl remains on the label and will release her debut EP Tennessee Girl later this month, while Chayce and Colin continue to release new music and promote their own projects.

Thompson’s rise on American Idol was unconventional. A construction worker from a small Kentucky town, he entered the competition with limited industry experience. His audition was submitted by a close friend, and throughout the season he often seemed surprised by his success. Judges and viewers praised his authentic country tone and his ability to reinterpret pop material — including a notable, country-tinged performance of Rihanna’s “Stay.”

After winning the show, Noah moved into recording and touring. He released several tracks, including a country-styled version of “Stay,” his winner’s single, and originals such as “One Day Tonight” and “Make You Rich.” Noah also released a debut EP, Middle of God Knows Where, in the summer of 2023 and joined a co-headlining tour with fellow season 20 finalist HunterGirl. He has appeared at events like the CMA Festival, but his recent absence from some label events and showcases has drawn attention.

A reluctant contestant

Throughout his time on the show, Noah often came across as a reluctant contestant — a talented performer who did not set out to be a professional artist. Unlike some of his peers who had long pursued music careers in places like Nashville, Thompson had limited songwriting and performance experience before American Idol. That background made his victory feel all the more surprising to fans and industry observers, and it highlighted the importance of finding strong management and support as he navigates the next stage of his career.

Fans feared for Noah’s well-being, “man you’re not looking healthy” said one

As Noah’s public presence decreased, fans began to voice concern. After a March 20 post showing a new haircut — his first since January — several followers commented on his appearance and weight loss, expressing worry about his health. One fan suggested the change could be health- or substance-related and urged him to seek help if needed, reminding him of his responsibilities as a parent. Other messages were supportive, asking him to stay on a positive path and praising his music.

Looking ahead, Noah’s representative emphasizes that he is working on new material and plans to make announcements when the timing is right. While the split from 19/Recordings/BBR Music Group marks a change, it does not necessarily signal the end of Noah’s momentum. His catalog of singles, the debut EP, and his touring experience provide a foundation he can build on as an independent artist or while seeking new partnerships. Fans and industry watchers will be paying attention to his next moves and hopeful for more music and renewed visibility in the months to come.
