Michael Bolton and Chelsie Hightower eliminated from Dancing With the Stars. VIDEO
The latest results episode of Dancing With the Stars ended with Michael Bolton and partner Chelsie Hightower being sent home. Their exit followed a judges’ critique that many viewers found harsh, and energized discussion about whether judging and audience reaction influenced the outcome.
During the previous competition episode the judges were particularly critical of Michael’s jive. One of the panel’s comments called it among the worst jives in the show’s history, and that harsh assessment generated strong reactions both in the studio and among viewers. Typically when a celebrity receives tough feedback, they attract sympathy votes; in this case Michael did not receive enough viewer support to remain in the competition.
After the elimination, Michael made clear he was upset by the judges’ remarks. In a post-show interview he described Bruno’s comments as “inappropriate and disrespectful” (watch here). The exchange is likely to be a talking point in recaps and media coverage of the episode.
The show also addressed “boo-gate,” the controversy over what the audience’s boos were directed at during the live broadcast. Host Tom Bergeron promised unseen footage would clarify whether the boos were aimed at the judges’ scores or something else. New clip segments aired showing the judges visibly upset as the audience reacted; however, the footage did not settle the matter conclusively. While the judges clearly felt the boos were aimed at them, the extra footage did not definitively establish who or what the audience was booing (see the clip).
The results show moved quickly through the list of safe couples. Early in the episode Kyle and Lacey were declared safe, followed by tension around Brandy and Maks that the broadcast played up for dramatic effect. The judges discussed their role in offering constructive feedback, with Len suggesting critiques should be balanced by encouragement and not delivered with relentless negativity.
Performances during the results show included a standout set from Janelle Monáe, who delivered an otherworldly rendition of “Tightrope” that earned applause from the audience and judges alike (video).
Backstage segments featured host Brooke interviewing contestants including Florence, The Situation, and Bristol before the final results were announced. Brooke also spoke with Jennifer and Derek about the boo-gate moment, and the show aired additional footage showing the judges’ reactions to audience boos during Jennifer and Derek’s routine.
The Macy’s Stars of Dance troupe performed a production inspired by Michael Jackson; the routine, however, was set to a Sting track and presented with Cirque du Soleil–style staging (watch the performance).
Musical performances included Seal singing his new single “Don’t Let It Bring You Down,” adding a live-music interlude to the results episode.
When the program returned from commercial breaks, more couples were declared safe in sequence. Florence and Corky, Bristol and Mark, Audrina and Tony, Jennifer and Derek, Kurt and Anna, Margaret and Louis, Rick and Cheryl, and Brandy and Maks all secured their places for the next week. At the end of the night the bottom two consisted of Michael and Chelsie and another couple; the judges and audience votes ultimately led to Michael and Chelsie’s elimination.
Emotion ran high during the elimination announcement. Michael expressed surprise and disappointment at leaving the competition, and the exchange with the judges, particularly Bruno, dominated the post-show conversation. While some viewers defended the judges’ right to be candid, others criticized the tone of the critique. The episode underscored the delicate balance between honest judging and maintaining respect for contestants.
Below is the list of couples declared safe during the episode:
- Kyle and Lacey
- Florence and Corky
- Bristol and Mark
- Audrina and Tony
- Jennifer and Derek
- Kurt and Anna
- Margaret and Louis
- Rick and Cheryl
- Brandy and Maks
- The Situation and Karina
Overall, the episode combined musical performances, backstage interviews, and the familiar tension of elimination night. It also left unresolved questions about audience reactions and judge behavior that fans will likely continue to debate until the next live show.
