NBC has announced a star-studded lineup for its upcoming live musical event Hairspray Live!, with Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG and Grammy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson and multiple Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein taking leading roles. The production reunites producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, whose previous live musical successes for television set high expectations for this new staging.
Adding to the creative momentum, acclaimed television director Alex Rudzinski will join the team. Fresh from the highly praised Grease Live! for FOX, Rudzinski brings extensive live-television experience, having also directed Dancing With the Stars from 2005–2014. His addition follows the producers’ pattern of recruiting directors with proven skill in large-scale live broadcasts, a move that bodes well for Hairspray Live!’s production values and pacing.
Harvey Fierstein will reprise the role of Edna Turnblad for the televised version and has also written the teleplay. Fierstein originated the role on Broadway and won a Tony Award for his performance; his return to Edna promises to bring authenticity and theatrical authority to the live event. Jennifer Hudson will play Motormouth Maybelle, delivering one of the show’s most powerful musical moments. NBC executives have expressed confidence that Hudson’s interpretation of the signature song will be a highlight of the broadcast.
Hudson’s resume includes both stage and screen achievements. She recently completed a celebrated run in the revival of The Color Purple, making a notable Broadway debut as Shug Avery. She first rose to national attention on American Idol in 2004 and quickly translated that exposure into a recording and film career. Her debut album, Jennifer Hudson, entered the Billboard 200 at number two and sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. within its first six weeks; it earned four Grammy nominations and won for Best R&B Album. On screen, Hudson earned an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her role as Effie White in Dreamgirls, and has since appeared in films and television projects that showcase both her acting and vocal abilities.
Hairspray Live! brings together a creative team experienced in translating Broadway energy for a television audience. Stage director Kenny Leon, who led The Wiz Live!, will collaborate with television director Alex Rudzinski to blend theatrical staging and broadcast dynamics. Choreographer Jerry Mitchell, known for Kinky Boots and On Your Feet, will create dance sequences tailored for live television. Music and lyrics are by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the songwriting duo familiar to TV audiences from Smash and known for their Broadway work.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron serve as executive producers on Hairspray Live!, continuing their work producing live theatrical events for network television. The producers’ prior successes and their partnership with Hudson—who previously worked with them on Smash and Academy Award telecasts—suggest a production focused on strong casting and tight integration between music, staging, and television direction. Harvey Fierstein’s teleplay aims to preserve the heart of the original stage work while adapting it to the demands of a live broadcast.
Hairspray Live! is scheduled to air Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will originate from Los Angeles. With recognizable stars, seasoned directors, and a creative team that bridges Broadway and television, the production is positioned as a major holiday-season live event for NBC. Viewers can expect an energetic musical performance that honors the stage classic while leveraging the unique possibilities of live TV production.
