Katy Perry and Lionel Richie Ditching American Idol for King Charles?

Two of the most familiar faces from the American Idol judging panel, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, are scheduled to perform at The Coronation Concert in honor of King Charles III on Sunday, May 7 — the day after the coronation. That date creates a clear scheduling wrinkle: American Idol is slated to air live from Los Angeles the same evening, meaning the pair could be absent from the show’s live broadcast coast to coast.

For major artists, a royal invitation is difficult to refuse, and this appearance highlights the international pull of both performers. Yet television production has options. Producers could arrange experienced former judges like Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson to step in as temporary panelists for that episode, while Katy and Lionel fulfill their commitments in Windsor. Alternatively, technology might allow for a live video appearance or recorded segments to keep them involved with the show despite the time difference. Either way, the dual bookings underscore the global profile of the Idol judges and give networks a chance to promote two judges performing for royalty.

From a publicity standpoint, the network behind American Idol will likely highlight that two of its judges have been invited to sing at a major state event, and producers may coordinate appearances that connect both the U.S. broadcast and the Coronation Concert for viewers on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Coronation Concert set for Windsor Castle

The Coronation Concert, staged on the grounds of Windsor Castle, will feature an eclectic lineup confirmed by the BBC. Alongside Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, performers include British pop group Take That, celebrated tenor Andrea Bocelli, Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, singer-songwriter Freya Ridings and classical-soul composer and producer Alexis Ffrench. These names form part of a broader roster of artists scheduled to perform on Sunday, May 7.

The live event will welcome around 20,000 members of the public and invited guests, while millions more will watch and listen on broadcast and digital platforms. The BBC will make the concert available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with audio coverage on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds. Additional artists are expected to be announced as the date approaches.

Organizers describe the concert as a celebration of a new chapter for the nation, emphasizing themes of love, respect and optimism. The programme is intended to reflect the diversity of the United Kingdom — highlighting the four nations, their communities and the Commonwealth — through a mix of musical styles and performers.

“To share the stage with the other performers at The Coronation Concert is a once-in-a-lifetime event”

Lionel Richie brings a distinguished musical legacy to the event. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, he has also served as a Global Ambassador and Chairman of the Global Ambassador Group for The Prince’s Trust. On accepting the invitation, Lionel described sharing the stage with the concert’s artists as “a once-in-a-lifetime event” and called it an honor and a celebration.

Katy Perry was appointed an ambassador of The British Asian Trust in 2020, recognizing her long-standing charitable work, including her role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and the efforts of her Firework Foundation. The Firework Foundation supports children from underserved communities by promoting arts education and empowerment. Katy said she was excited to perform at the Coronation Concert and to help raise awareness for the British Asian Trust’s Children’s Protection Fund — an initiative that aims to support community-level responses and fundraising to tackle issues such as child trafficking.

Musically, the concert will be supported by an impressive roster of ensemble players: a 70-piece orchestra, a house band, the Massed Bands of the Household Division and the Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra are expected to provide a rich, orchestral backdrop to the performances. In addition to headline acts, the programme will feature The Coronation Choir — a specially formed, inclusive choir drawn from community choirs and amateur singers across the United Kingdom. This diverse choir will showcase a range of voices, from sea shanty groups and farmers to cab drivers and reggae ensembles, reflecting the broad community spirit the concert aims to celebrate.

With established stars, classical talent and grassroots singers sharing one stage, The Coronation Concert is being positioned as a high-profile cultural moment that combines pageantry with contemporary music — an event designed to engage audiences both in the grounds of Windsor Castle and around the world.
