Kelly Clarkson has responded publicly to recent allegations that the production of her daytime talk show has an unhealthy workplace culture behind the scenes.
The Kelly Clarkson Show host and original American Idol winner posted on social media Friday night, assuring viewers and staff that she is committed to maintaining a respectful, safe work environment and will take necessary steps to address any problems.
“In my 20 years in the entertainment industry, I’ve always led with my heart and what I believed to be right,” Kelly wrote. “I love my team at The Kelly Clarkson Show and to find out that anyone is feeling unheard or disrespected on this show is unacceptable.”
Kelly commits to “creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment”
Clarkson emphasized that she has been and will remain committed to creating and maintaining a healthy workplace. She noted that with the program preparing to relocate to the East Coast, she feels an increased responsibility to ensure the teams moving with the show and the new hires in New York reflect strong professional standards and kindness.
As part of that pledge, Clarkson said she will implement leadership training for senior staff members — and include herself in that process. “There is always room to grow and ensure we are all becoming the best version of ourselves in any business, especially when it comes to leadership, to ensure that any notion of toxicity is eradicated,” she wrote.
Her message came in response to a Rolling Stone report published the same day that described troubling conditions behind the scenes at the program. The article cited claims that some employees were overworked and underpaid, and that working on the show had been “toxic” and at times “traumatizing” to their mental health. Rolling Stone spoke with 10 former employees and one current employee, several of whom have long experience in television production.
Executive producer named by sources
Multiple sources identified executive producer Alex Duda as a central figure in the complaints. One source told reporters, “I think Alex Duda’s [executive producer] a monster,” and another said an industry colleague had warned them beforehand about working with her. Those interviewed attributed a range of supervisory problems to her leadership style.
At the same time, sources in the report sought to separate Clarkson from the alleged misconduct. Several former staffers told Rolling Stone they did not view the host as responsible for the behavior attributed to production leadership. One source said they “would be shocked if she knew” about the full extent of the problems, and another suggested the host was largely unaware of how unhappy some staff had become.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for NBCUniversal issued a statement affirming the company’s approach to workplace concerns. The statement said, in part: “We are committed to a safe and respectful work environment and take workplace complaints very seriously and to insinuate otherwise is untrue. When issues are reported they are promptly reviewed, investigated and acted upon as appropriate. The Kelly Clarkson Show strives to build a safe, respectful and equitable workplace that nurtures a culture of inclusivity and creativity.”
Clarkson’s public response reiterates her intention to address the situation through training, hiring practices and ongoing oversight. She made clear that she values her team and regards any reports of staff feeling unheard or disrespected as unacceptable.
As the production prepares its move to the East Coast and prepares to assemble a combination of existing staff and new hires in New York, Clarkson’s statement suggests a focus on improving leadership practices at the show. She committed to leadership training for senior staff and indicated an openness to change in order to ensure a respectful workplace culture.
The Rolling Stone report and Clarkson’s response have generated public attention and renewed scrutiny of behind-the-scenes practices in daytime television. For now, the show’s production and NBCUniversal say they will review and address complaints as they arise, while Clarkson has pledged to participate directly in efforts to make the workplace safer and healthier for everyone involved.
