American Idol: Ranking the Top 15 Male Contestants

I debated how to present this list and decided to separate the genders: tonight I’ll cover the guys and tomorrow I’ll rank the girls. Grouping 30 contestants in a single post is too long and risks losing focus. Now that many song choices are known, it’s easier to weigh each contestant’s prospects.

15) Bryant Tadeo

Choosing “Heaven” is unlikely to secure Bryant a Top 10 spot unless the rest of the field falters. The song comes across as safe and karaoke-like, which feels contrary to the direction Idol often encourages. Elijah’s presence among the boys also complicates Bryant’s path — voters and producers may favor different styles, and Bryant doesn’t stand out enough to guarantee advancement.

14) Vincent Powell

Vincent seems pleasant and might occupy a visible slot on the show, but he reads more like filler than a frontrunner. There are stronger voices in the male group, and his song choice hasn’t impressed. It’s hard to imagine him outperforming contenders like Burnell, Cortez, or David in a direct voter showdown.

13) Mathenee Treco

Mathenee picked a song that Idol audiences have heard repeatedly, and he tends to push things so far he risks going overboard. A subdued performance could seem bland, while anything dramatic invites criticism for over-singing. That precarious balance makes his continuation beyond this round doubtful.

12) Gurpreet Singh Sarin

I’m growing skeptical that the producers will leave Gurpreet’s fate entirely to the public. After some surprising eliminations this season, controversial contestants sometimes receive less freedom to remain in the show. That dynamic could work against Gurpreet, regardless of his talent.

11) David Willis

David faces the twin challenges of limited screen time and building an emotional connection with viewers. Long-term, gaining recognition is crucial; short-term, he must convince judges and viewers he deserves a spot over more established favorites. Word is he may accompany himself on guitar, which tends to help contestants showcase authenticity.

10) Lazaro Arbos

Lazaro has had plenty of screen presence, but his recent song choice weakens his standing. It feels unserious and risks undermining the momentum he once had. If David delivers a strong performance, Lazaro could lose his Top 10 position. With Charlie already in the mix, it’s difficult to see both Charlie and Lazaro comfortably holding Top 10 spots.

9) Josh Holiday

Johnny Keyser’s recent exit benefits Josh, who now appears more distinct. His song selection isn’t original, but it’s a crowd-pleaser when done well. If he performs strongly, Josh has a shot at sneaking into the Top 10, though climbing to the Top 5 remains a steep climb.

8) Charlie Askew

Many viewers heard a shaky performance from a very nervous young man, while the judges believed they heard potential. Charlie has stayed longer than some expect, and he could be on the verge of elimination unless the judges intervene with a surprise save or wildcard.

7) Elijah Liu

Elijah brings a contemporary vibe and has polarized fans: some find him charming, others critique his falsetto. His success will hinge on song choice—picking a number that suits his strengths is essential. Choose too ambitiously and a weak vocal could alienate even devoted supporters.

6) Cortez Shaw

Cortez’s next song choice feels smart and current—exactly the type of material he should tackle on the show. He’s talented, but the competition is stiff; making the Top 5 will require consistently strong performances and voter momentum.

5) Curtis Finch Jr.

Curtis brings undeniable vocal skill and has earned praise for his performances, which gives him an advantage. Still, his demeanor comes across as smug to some viewers, which could hamper his ability to turn admiration into votes. History shows that vocal talent alone doesn’t always translate to phone calls from casual viewers.

4) Nick Boddington

Even without knowing his upcoming song, Nick has built goodwill with his recent performances. He often plays piano, and that musicianship boosts his credibility. If he continues on this trajectory, he’s in a strong position to advance.

3) Devin Velez

Devin made significant gains after his rendition of “Listen,” attracting Spanish-speaking viewers and demonstrating versatility. He’s a confident, skilled vocalist, and that broad appeal should help him secure a Top 5 slot.

2) Burnell Taylor

Burnell has cultivated visible support online, and many fans noticed when he didn’t sing as much in a recent episode. That reaction suggests he resonates with audiences. If producers allow him to move into the Top 10, public support should push him into the Top 5.

1) Paul Jolley

As the season’s last male country singer, Paul currently enjoys strong forward momentum. For now he looks like a fan favorite emerging from last week’s performances. I don’t necessarily expect him to win the whole competition—he may peak around sixth or seventh place—but at the moment he appears to have the most immediate momentum among the male contestants.

Check back tomorrow when I rank the girls. Right now I’m not convinced any of these guys is a guaranteed winner; the field feels reminiscent of seasons where the women dominated and the men were less consistent.
