During his run on the two-time Emmy Award-winning competition series, Sawyer was a member of Team Pharrell and earned the Season 8 title. His performances resonated widely: he became the first artist on the show to have 14 songs simultaneously charting in the iTunes Top 200 in a single week, and while competing on The Voice his tracks were downloaded nearly one million times on iTunes. These milestones helped establish him as a distinctive young voice with a devoted following.
For A Good Storm, Sawyer worked closely with producers Mikal Blu and Izy, whose credits include collaborations with acclaimed pop and singer-songwriter acts, and he also collaborated with his former coach Pharrell Williams. The record draws on the intimate, roots-influenced sensibility that has characterized much of Sawyer’s recorded work, focusing on emotional storytelling, acoustic textures and a direct vocal presence.
The album’s lead material includes the single “4 Pockets” and other tracks such as “Take It All,” which recently received a music video premiere. That video has gathered significant attention, with combined views and streams on YouTube and Spotify approaching one million. The visual for “Take It All” expands on the themes of the song while showcasing Sawyer’s thoughtful performance style.
After the album’s release, Sawyer will support A Good Storm with a live tour, beginning May 8 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The concerts will give fans a chance to hear the new material performed live, alongside songs that first drew attention to him on the TV stage and in his early independent releases.
Raised on an 88-acre farm in upstate New York, Sawyer developed his voice and stage presence through regular weekend performances at a local farmers market and by releasing his own independent debut work locally. Although he is naturally reserved, his music demonstrates deep empathy and an expressive, mature vocal delivery that belies his youth. From his first televised performances he quickly connected with audiences through straightforward, heartfelt interpretations of songs.
Joining Sawyer on the May 3 broadcast, DNCE brings a contrasting, upbeat energy. Fronted by Joe Jonas, DNCE blends pop, funk and dance elements into an accessible live show. The band’s lineup includes bassist and keyboardist Cole Whittle, known for co-founding the group Semi Precious Weapons; guitarist JinJoo, who brings international experience and has toured with the Jonas Brothers as well as other pop acts; and drummer Jack Lawless, who has performed with the Jonas Brothers and other contemporary rock projects.
DNCE has enjoyed mainstream attention with singles like “Cake By the Ocean,” and the group was also scheduled as an opening act for Selena Gomez’s 2016 Revival Tour. Their appearance alongside Sawyer on The Voice offers viewers a mix of reflective singer-songwriter material and high-energy pop performances in one episode.
This upcoming broadcast will highlight both Sawyer Fredericks’s transition from a breakout TV talent to a recording and touring artist and DNCE’s continued presence as a lively pop act. Sawyer’s A Good Storm marks the next step in his career, emphasizing intimate songwriting and collaboration with established producers, while his live shows will aim to translate the nuances of his studio recordings to audiences across the country.
