American Idol 2016 finalist Avalon Young sang in front of the judges. What happened to her audition?
Avalon Young, who finished in the Top 10 on American Idol’s final FOX season in 2016, revealed that she returned to audition in front of the current panel of judges—Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan—but viewers never saw her tryout air on television. Fans noticed her absence when the audition episodes were broadcast, even though Avalon had publicly announced she would be auditioning again.
Last November she posted to social media announcing a return to American Idol and encouraged followers to tune in on February 19th. That post was later removed from her Instagram, suggesting she may have been informed in advance that her audition would not be included in the televised episodes. Despite not being shown on broadcast, Avalon later confirmed on social channels that she did, in fact, perform for the judges and even shared photos showing her holding a Golden Ticket.
“Just cuz they didn’t air me doesn’t mean i ain’t goin back to hollywood!”
After the audition episodes aired with no sign of her segment, Avalon addressed the situation directly on Instagram Stories and later on Twitter, writing that just because her audition wasn’t broadcast didn’t mean she wouldn’t be moving on to Hollywood. Given her past success on the show, it would be unsurprising for the judges to advance a former Top 10 finalist; the decision not to include the audition on television likely had more to do with editorial choices than with Avalon’s talent.
Producers carefully craft episodes around a mix of performances and personal stories, and networks cannot include every moment that occurs during filming. In Avalon’s case, the producers may have decided that other contestants’ narratives or performances fit the episode structure better. That does not mean Avalon was overlooked by the judges—her social posts and the Golden Ticket photos indicate she did receive a favorable outcome at the audition stage.

Avalon was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in 2021
Avalon’s life after her initial Idol appearance has included major personal milestones and serious health challenges. Shortly after season 15, she publicly came out as LGBT. In March 2021 she faced a far more difficult test when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
One of her operations in August 2021 was conducted while she was awake for part of the procedure. Awake craniotomies are sometimes necessary when tumors sit close to regions that control speech or movement; staying conscious during the operation helps surgeons monitor and preserve these crucial functions. Avalon’s family shared details about the medical plan at the time, and fortunately the reports after surgery indicated she emerged without neurological loss.
Following that surgery, Avalon continued additional rounds of treatment. Throughout her recovery she remained creative and committed to music, writing and releasing songs even while undergoing difficult medical care. Her resilience and ongoing work as an artist are important parts of her story—factors that could have made for compelling television, but which may not have fit into this season’s edited audition episodes.
With so many emotional arcs and performances to choose from, producers must make tough decisions about what to air. Avalon’s history—both her success on the show and her health battles—would have provided a powerful narrative thread. Still, editing and scheduling constraints likely determined why her audition footage did not appear in the broadcast audition episodes.
Avalon has suggested she progressed beyond the televised audition and into Hollywood, but viewers will have to wait for Hollywood Week coverage to see how far she went in the competition this season. Hollywood Week episodes typically air soon after auditions wrap, so fans can watch for further developments when that stage is shown. Whether or not her story receives extended airtime, Avalon’s journey—from Idol finalist to survivor and returning contestant—remains a testament to her perseverance and dedication to music.
