Review: Soul Surfer — Hollywood’s latest surf film

Although I was skeptical at first, the film won me over once it started. The production captured Hawaiian locations authentically, with scenes shot on Kauai and Oahu rather than on green screens. The surfing sequences stand out: Bethany and Alana Blanchard performed the surfing stunts themselves, delivering impressive, realistic rides. The heart of the movie, however, is the real Bethany Hamilton’s story of survival and resilience. After losing her left arm in a shark attack at a remote Kauai surf spot, she recovered and went on to a professional surfing career, inspiring many in the process. That true story provides emotional depth that keeps the film from feeling cliché.
