American Idol and DWTS alum Kellie Pickler returned to perform on stage for the first time since her husband’s tragic death

American Idol and Dancing with the Stars alum Kellie Pickler made an emotional return to the stage on Monday night, April 22, performing for the first time since the devastating loss of her husband, songwriter Kyle Jacobs. The performance took place at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium during a tribute concert honoring country music icon Patsy Cline.

As she stepped into the spotlight, the audience rose to their feet, offering a standing ovation that underscored the warmth and support of the Nashville community. From the stage, Pickler admitted her nerves, saying, “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was not incredibly nervous right now. It’s been the first time I’ve been up on stage in a while.” She also expressed how meaningful it was to honor Patsy Cline, a major influence on her career and the reason she fell in love with music.

Pickler chose to perform “The Woman I Am,” a song she co-wrote with her late husband, Kyle Jacobs, more than a decade ago. Introducing the song, she shared a personal memory: “My husband and I actually wrote this song together, gosh, over a decade ago. The last time I was here in the Ryman Auditorium was with him on a date night, and I know he is here with us tonight.” The intimate connection between the song and her marriage made the performance particularly poignant for the singer and for those who came to honor both Cline’s legacy and Pickler’s personal journey.

Kyle Jacobs was a respected songwriter who penned material for major country artists during his career. His credits included work recorded by artists such as Garth Brooks, Trace Adkins and George Strait. His passing left a significant mark on both his family and the country music community.

Kellie Pickler’s husband died by suicide in February 2023

Kyle Jacobs died in February 2023 at age 49. Law enforcement reports indicate that Pickler was asleep earlier that morning and awoke shortly before the incident; after not finding him and being unable to open an upstairs bedroom door, she and an assistant called 911. Authorities later reported that he had taken his own life in an upstairs bedroom/office inside the home.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as an intraoral shotgun wound and noted there were no drugs detected in his system at the time. The report also referenced a medical history that included pseudoseizures, gastrointestinal bleeding, elevated liver enzymes, and chronic alcohol use. These details were shared in official findings released after the investigation.

In the months following Jacobs’ death, Pickler has spoken publicly about grief, gratitude and the lessons she holds close. In August 2023 she thanked fans for their support, explaining that one of the most valuable lessons she learned from her husband was, in a crisis, to “do nothing, just be still.” She said she has tried to heed that advice while navigating a very difficult period and expressed appreciation for the letters, calls and messages that have helped her through the darkest time in her life.

Pickler and Jacobs were married in 2011 and later shared parts of their life together in the reality series I Love Kellie Pickler, which ran for three seasons beginning in 2015. Their creative partnership extended beyond music and into their public life, and that shared history added depth to Pickler’s return to performance at the Ryman.

Monday’s tribute concert was both a celebration of Patsy Cline’s enduring influence on country music and a heartfelt moment of connection for Pickler and her fans. Singing a song co-written with Jacobs at the venue where she once attended a date night with him created a memorable and emotional evening—one that demonstrated the power of music to honor legacy, mend hearts and bring people together.
